Abby Wambach: The moments that make up a stellar career
Or where Steve Gleason blocked a punt the night the building reopened for the first time after Hurricane Katrina. “I’ve been the blessed one for so many years to be a part of this team”. Her name is Abby Wambach, and she has now chose to retire.
“There’s a fearless spirit that is ingrained in American women’s soccer that we all owe to Abby Wambach”. She’s a two-time Olympic gold medalist and the 2012 FIFA World Player of the Year. Dunn had been on and off the USWNT since 2013 and even though she missed out on the World Cup, she used that as motivation and won the NWSL MVP award this year.
“I know everybody wanted to get me a goal”, she said. “She will be irreplaceable”. Mia Hamm had just notched her second goal of the game to put the US up 4-1, and the University of Florida senior ran onto the field to replace Tiffeny Milbrett.
Fans of the two teams reacted by either leaping off their feet and shouting or freezing in place and clutching their heads in disbelief.
Although the players eventually dropped the lawsuit – and the US went on to win the World Cup – Wambach has continued to be outspoken about the risks and disadvantages of playing on artificial turf.
By the time this summer’s cup matches began, Wambach was 35 and relatively old for an athlete.
“Running and the game is not easy by any means”, she said in the buildup to her final match, according to the Associated Press.
When Simmons inquired further, Wambach added, “First of all, [Klinsmann] hasn’t really focused, I feel like, enough attention on the youth programs”. “Forget the medals won, the records broken and the sacrifices made”.
The future of the USA women’s team is in good hands.
It was hardly the prettiest game from the reigning world champions, and the lack of fluidity in their play was the result of trying to force Wambach the ball time and again when windows simply weren’t there. The U.S. would go on to win that game and advance to the championship game.
Tonight when the US Women’s National Team takes on China in New Orleans, a major chapter in American athletics will come to a close. Abby Wambach has the most goals, with 184.
WAMBACH: Women’s soccer has definitely changed over the last 15 years for sure. Her friends and family are all joining the 29,000 expected to bid her adieu at the Dome.
“It seems to me there are too many egos in our men’s program right now and the bigger ego of all of them is the one who is leading the charge”, said Wambach.
“The more money that soccer players can make in this country you’re gonna find our better athletes will be getting more involved in playing soccer”, she said.
