Abby Wambach would fire Jurgen Klinsmann from United States coaching role
It was as if the result didn’t matter. But no one has scored more goals in global games than an American. On Wednesday, the final game of the USWNT’s World Cup Victory Tour also served as the last global appearance for the 35-year-old forward, and she received a sendoff worthy of her remarkable career.
Abby Wambach, an all-time great, leaves behind an undeniable legacy on American soccer.
That is quite the the stance to take on the state of USA soccer, but at least Wambach is making her point known with a powerful position.
Abby Wambach (C) hugs teammates after walking off the field for the final time in her career during the women’s soccer match against China at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome on December 16, 2015 in New Orleans.
FIFA PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Wambach won the game’s highest honor in January 2013 when she was named the FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year.
However, there is very little that Wambach could do to tarnish her reputation, and she will rightly sign off from her incredible career as a bona fide legend of the game. Her final goal came in her 251st cap on August 19, 2015 against Costa Rica. It was stoppage time and the US was trailing 2-1.
“I set out and accomplished everything I had ever dreamt of”, Wambach said.
After Wambach left the field Wednesday night, China held on to shut out the World Cup champion United States 1-0, the Americans’ first loss on home soil in more than a decade.
Anyway, the important thing to notice is how Abby Wambach’s statements have been the most damning criticism we have seen in the Jurgen Klinsmann era. And I love Fabian Johnson and he plays in Germany and is actually killing it right now after being sent home for “faking an injury”. And for me to do more and to push the sport forward even more than they did, it really is special.
To Wambach’s credit she never complained about her lessened role, and seems to have made peace with the fact that a new generation of stars has blossomed.
“And I think the biggest ego of all of them is the one that’s leading the charge”. I just think that this experiment that U.S. Soccer has given Jurgen isn’t one that personally I’m into. She is focused on becoming an advocate for greater equality. The captain of Team USA got super emotional during her heart wrenching speech.
