ABC Apologizes After Mistakenly Listing Tom Hanks, Amy Adams as Oscar Nominees
It was especially interesting because there had been an expectation that both Adams and Hanks would earn Oscar nominations for their film work from the previous year.
In addition, Octavia Spencer received a mention in the Best Supporting Actress category. We get chills just thinking about it.
You can see how they made the error with Adams at least, given that Arrival is up for a bajillion other awards. Arrival joined the “elite club” by being a nominee.
You probably wouldn’t believe me if I told you “Suicide Squad” got the same number of Oscar nominations as Martin Scorsese’s “Silence” or Clint Eastwood’s “Sully”.
It is unsure whether Arrival can bag an Oscar this year.
It was a mixed bag for Hidden Figures, though: After Henson’s snub, the film – which nabbed a nomination for outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture at for Screen Actors Guild Awards – pulled through with a spot in the Best Picture category. And had Adams been nominated, as almost everyone expected her to be, I would be rooting for her to win on her sixth try.
This is not the kind of snub that is easily forgotten. When the odd alien ships descend, sending the world – particularly its military leaders – into a frenzy, Banks is one of the few who keeps her cool. Hers is not a glorified supporting performance pumped up to the “leading” category due to the prestige of the participant (Away from Her, The Reader). She’s a clear number five though, so the nomination is her reward. As it is, she wasn’t likely to beat Emma Stone. But this whirlwind of irreverence and action, starring an irrepressible Ryan Reynolds, seemed to have a chance at big awards.
Adams shined in the role and previously earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress for the part. What will this snub inspire? Finally she won again in 2012 for “Iron Lady” playing Margaret Thatcher. True, that’s not exactly a lineup to inspire Oscar attention. It’s this very restraint, we’d argue, that makes Adams’ performance one of last year’s best. The right project could put her right back into Oscar contention come 2019.
She doesn’t seem like one to stew. The Oscar is not going to elude Adams forever.
“Arrival” director Denis Villeneuve, also a nominee, felt Adams’ absence deeply.
