ABC in Talks with Lucasfilm to Make a Star Wars TV Series
Six months into the job as ABC Entertainment’s president, Channing Dungey said she’s clear about where she wants to see the “black-ish” and “Fresh Off the Boat” network go, including toward further diversity.
“As a fan, I would absolutely love to say “Yes”. But what no one expected was Star Wars coming to the small screen. We have had conversations, and we will continue to have conversations with Lucasfilm.
The time has come and gone, but a STAR WARS television series is back on the table with ABC talking with Lucasfilm about a potential something.
“It’s all a little bit hush-hush”, she said.
– There have been conversations with Lucasfilm, the creative home of “Star Wars”, now owned by ABC parent Walt Disney Co., about the possibility of finding a “way to extend that brand into our programming”, but she didn’t elaborate on how or when that might occur. Not only are talks ongoing, but the statement “we don’t have an official timeline yet” sounds like the show is all but a given, and that it’s just a matter of when. Asked if they might look to find a unified feel for Marvel series on ABC moving forward, Dungey replied, “That’s an interesting question and we have talked about that, yes”. Would it be live-action? But on the other hand, the costs may be prohibitive for network TV. Castle fans endured plenty of tumult earlier this year, with ABC canceling the crime procedural not long after the announcement that star Stana Katic would not return. Later dubbed Star Wars: Underworld, the series had over 50 episodes scripted by multiple writers – including Battlestar Galactica showrunner Ronald D. Moore – before being put on hold in 2010 due to budget constraints.
