ABC star Jimmy Kimmel’s ‘divisive,’ politically charged Oscars were lowest on record
According to Entertainment Weekly, the 2018 Oscars telecast was the least-viewed in the prestigious awards show’s history.
Other winners: Gary Oldman won best actor for his portrayal of Winston Churchill in “Darkest Hour;” Frances McDormand won best actress for “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri;” Allison Janney won supporting actress for “I, Tonya;” and Sam Rockwell won supporting actor for “Three Billboards”.
Elsewhere, awards were spread around, recognising first-timers, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues and films inspired by other cultures.
He said the problem is that there aren’t stars anymore, except for him. That being said, I really feel that this award should’ve gone to Christopher Nolan for the absolute visual and aural insanity of “Dunkirk”. “My fellow nominees, you represent everything that is good and right and human about this profession”. Awards should not be Viewer’s Choice just because the organisers want mass popularity.
The Academy Awards, the biggest award ceremony in tinsel town, celebrated its long white, male history as it turned 90 years old yesterday-but it also tried to address its issues with race and gender. McDormand, a victor throughout the awards season for her scintillating turn as a grieving, rage-filled mother in “Three Billboards”, took home her second Oscar, 21 years after winning for “Fargo”. Host Jimmy Kimmel seems to have earned praise for another solid performance during his second consecutive year on stage. “Which she then packed in disposable Tupperware boxes and smuggled them into the show”, Kimmel said. You’ll come back as pissed off as me that this man has only been nominated for a single Oscar over his exemplary career, and that he lost to Alexandre Desplat for “The Shape of Water”.
Viewership for the Oscars is driven by the box-office success of nominated films.
Mexican director Guillermo del Toro has emerged triumphant with two Oscars to his name, one for Best Picture and one for Best Director.
Even more worrisome was a slide in the key demographic of adults aged 18-49, whose viewership was down 14 per cent from 2016. Last year they brought a group of tourists into the Academy theatre and this year they took a group of stars including Gal Gadot and Lupita Nyong’o to a theatre next door. The film came out more than a year before this year’s Oscar ceremony, which is an impressive feat.
