About Ahmed Mohamed and His Clock
A Muslim teenager who was arrested for taking a homemade clock to school after it was mistaken for a bomb will not face charges, police said today.
Irving Police Chief Larry Boyd said Wednesday it was a “very suspicious device”.
“When cops are gunned down, you don’t invite them to the White House“.
Later, he was pulled out of class and taken to the principal’s office.
Police searched his belongings and removed him from school in handcuffs.
The boy’s father said his son was picked on because he is Muslim.
“We found no evidence to support the perception that he intended to create alarm”, Boyd said.
Irving Mayor Beth Van Duyne said on her Facebook page she doesn’t fault the school or police for their actions.
A police photo of the device shows a carrying case containing a circuit board and power supply wired to a digital display.
Mohamed was suspended from school through Thursday.
This young student of Sudanese origin, who loves engineering gadgets in his spare time, brought a home-made clock to school to show to his engineering teacher. How am I going to respect you when you don’t respect the fearless men and women and innocent people who have lost their lives because of your incompetence?
Mohamed is a 14-year old who just went through a harrowing experience because he’s Muslim. Police detained him Monday after teachers at his school voiced concern about the device. “That’s too bad”, he said.
There’s been a lot of outrage about what happened and loads of support for Ahmed. The hashtag #IStandWithAhmed was tweeted more than 1 million times. Google is asking him to attend its science fair.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott also weighed in, cautioning that he did not know all the facts but that police were wrong to detain the boy. “I want it back with my humility”, Ahmed Mohamed said on Good Morning America.
The teenager said this incident made him feel “less than human”.
In a tweet, Obama called Ahmed’s clock “cool” and said more children should be inspired like him to enjoy science, because “it’s what makes America great”.
Ahmed’s father emigrated from Sudan and twice ran for the presidency of that country.
The teen has never been in trouble, Mohamed told CNN. Boyd said it was against the law to make a hoax bomb and cause people to be scared and call law enforcement.
All of these educators be fired. Both attackers were shot dead, and an officer was shot in the leg. From the other side of the world, the Islamic State group made an unproven claim of responsibility. They all followed procedures, she said.
