The Seattle Mariners face the Chicago White Sox in the second game of a four-game series tonight at U.S. Cellular Field.
Seattle Mariners starting pitcher Felix Hernandez throws against the Chicago White Sox during the first inning of a baseball game, Friday, Aug. 26, 2016, in Chicago.
Hernandez (9-4) outdueled Sale, who took the loss despite striking out 14 in a complete-game effort. After Vincent intentionally walked Jose Abreu, Frazier delivered the winning hit.David Robertson (4-2) picked up the win for the White Sox after pitching a scoreless ninth inningThe White Sox rallied from a 6-3 deficit in the seventh inning.
“I guess it looks good on paper but you want to come out on top in a game like that, no doubt”, Sale said. Then we scored those three runs, and the bullpen (was) exhausted, so I needed to go deep in the game.
After the game the Mariners sent down LF Nori Aoki to Tacoma and expect to make more moves Saturday. The Mariners collected five hits off Sale, only two for extra bases and none after the fourth inning. It was his fourth straight quality start, and he is now 5-0 in seven starts since returning from a two-month stay on the disabled list because of a strained calf muscle.
With a nifty defensive gem that Mariners’ manager Scott Servais called the play of the game, O’Malley put any worries about allowing the White Sox to come back to rest. “I couldn’t feel my legs and I was a little dizzy”. I had some good secondary pitches.
The soft-spoken Quintana, who entered Saturday third in the American League with a 2.84 ERA, quieted the Mariners’ bats for the most part.
The White Sox had a couple of base-running blunders and Hernandez got Shuck to line into a double play in the fifth inning, keeping the Mariners’ early lead intact. Avisail Garcia saved Morneau some breath when he hit a 415-foot home run for a 6-1 lead. DH Nelson Cruz hit a sacrifice fly in the first a day after leaving with back spasms.
“Seemed like getting the guys off the field, at least it was something to watch instead of just watching the umpires holding the headphones and just listening”, he said. “I mean, his nickname’s the King”. Servais said when Seager returns, the Mariners will likely recall a relief pitcher from the minors to bolster their bullpen.
White Sox: C Alex Avila (hamstring) was activated off the disabled list as C Dioner Navarro was traded to Toronto. Lawrie will be re-evaluated in the next few days.Chicago OF Melky Cabrera missed Thursday’s game because of illness. Manager Scott Servais said breaking the news to LeBlanc was hard and that he hopes the 32-year-old clears waivers and could be available to the Mariners once rosters expand.
The Mariners conducted a pregame contest where three players used a sling shot to launch a water balloon across the outfield as another player attempted to catch it without it bursting.
“I thought the emotional outburst from Adam Lind was tremendous”, Servais said.
