“Absolute hell”: Contents of L.A. school threat email revealed
A law enforcement official with access to the document provided the email to The Associated Press.
Los Angeles officials defended the move. But California officialdom – both in the law enforcement and political communities – erected a solid front in support of the 83-year-old Cortines, who is due to retire next year, as he’s done once before.
Students are back in classrooms in Los Angeles today after Tuesday’s massive shutdown of the school system following an anonymous terrorist threat that turned out to be a hoax.
Cops in NY, meanwhile, reasoned the danger was bogus – the unconvincing work of an impostor.
“It is irresponsible based on facts that have yet to be determined to criticise that decision at this point”, Beck told reporters.
No episodes of the hit show have dealt with threats to school districts, the show is known for drawing inspiration from real news events. “I want to reassure students, parents, guardians, teachers and other employees that our schools are safe”, LAUSD Chief Deputy Superintendent Michelle King said. “This is not a credible threat and not one that needs any action”. Rep. Adam Schiff said the threat was a “hoax to disrupt school districts in large cities”.
Miami-Dade County Public Schools chief communications officer Daisy Gonzalez-Diego told CBS Miami that local, state and federal authorities deemed the threat “less than credible”.
“Every school in Los Angeles school district is being targeted”.
Dr. Max Abrahms, professor at Northeastern University in Boston said that “what we know so far is that the threat was issued in a form of an e-mail and it went to somebody in a leadership position at the school”.
“It’s often better to keep them in school”, he said.
New York City Police Commissioner Bill Bratton, a former Los Angeles police chief, derided the L.A. closures as a “significant overreaction”.
He said a school superintendent received the threatening email Tuesday morning.
“I would say this to people that are critical… Right now we ask parents and families if you’ve not yet sent your children to school, please do not send them to school”.
In LA, the school board member who received the threat immediately contacted school district police, Det.
Some parents also got separate calls from the schools themselves.
“I have also seen reports more recently saying that the e-mail was sent somewhere closer and made to seem like it was being sent from Germany”, the professor continued. “So you take the investment NY has, and you take the nervousness that Los Angeles is feeling because it’s an hour away from San Bernardino, and that creates a situation where I would expect the two cities to react differently”. Cortines, citing the December 2 terrorist attack in nearby San Bernardino that left 14 people dead, said he closed Los Angeles schools “out of an abundance of caution”.
Regardless, the mass closure means the school district could be shorted millions of dollars in state funding. “They said schools are closed for investigation”.
“I think the circumstances in neighboring San Bernardino, I think what has happened in the nation, I think what happened internationally” influenced the decision, Cortines said.
LAUSD said all students were safe, per the board president.
