Abuse investigation leads to 2 dead children in storage unit
The Monterey County Weekly reported that the Salinas police chief said the killings did not take place in his town.
“She has and will continue to receive medical attention for serious injuries”, Hagwood told NBC News.
Attorneys Douglas Prouty, who represents the 39-year-old, and Robert Zernich, who represents the teen, both declined to comment.
The Redding Police Department said it has identified two children who were in the pair’s custody and who are missing.
The cause of their deaths has not been determined, pending an autopsy scheduled for Wednesday.
But it added it has yet to determine if they are the same children found dead in Redding, a city of 91,000 located 300 miles north of San Francisco. Their father later gave up custody, and Huntsman took the children to raise with her 12-year-old twins, who were taken by Child Protective Services and placed in foster care following her arrest.
Huntsman and Curiel are being held on charges of torture, mayhem and child abuse with a bail set at $1 million. The Plumas County Sheriff’s Office says the girl was starved and injured.
“We knew nothing about a 6-year-old and a 3-year-old”, Hagwood said.
Orr said two years ago before their mother’s death, she used to see the kids every day, but it’s been a nightmare trying to contact Huntsman.
“I can’t help you”, an employee – who did not identify herself – said several times to the Record Searchlight.
But no decision has yet been made, he said, adding that the case could possibly remain in Plumas County or be transferred to Monterey County.
Redding Police Lieutenant Pete Brindley wouldn’t say whether the two children were killed in the storage unit or elsewhere.
Additionally, four complaints alleging neglect had been lodged with the Monterey County Department of Social Services over the past year, the newspaper reported.
Huntsman is the older sister of Wayne Huntsman, who is charged with starting the fire that ravaged the Eldorado National Forest in 2013. Those children are Tami Joy Huntsman’s.
On Monday, Criswell took to Facebook to comment on the case.
Huntsman isn’t the only one in her family to face high-profile charges. She is reportedly “fighting for her life” and was undergoing surgery last night, per KSBW.
Concealing her identity by wearing a black hoodie, Tami told a TV reporter, “I’m devastated, in shock, I can’t believe that he would ever have anything to do with something like that or that he would do anything intentionally like that”.
