Accused Serial Sex Offender Bill Cosby’s wife questioned under oath
Bill Cosby’s long-suffering wife, who has stood by his side amid dozens of sexual assault allegations against him, was finally deposed Monday in a defamation lawsuit filed against him by seven accusers.
Monday’s deposition marks the first time that his 71-year-old wife has been forced to give evidence in cases against her husband despite a last-ditch attempt by his legal team to get her off the hook.
Prior to the testimony lawyers for the Cosby’s argued Mrs Cosby had no useful information on the legitimacy of the women’s claims and conversation between her and her husband were confidential under the MA marital disqualification rule.
“Those statements denied Cosby had sexually assaulted the women, and called their reliability into question”. However, that’s only for criminal cases with a trial, and these defamation lawsuits against Cosby are part of a civil case.
She also asked the judge to not order her to sit for a deposition in the case because it would be an undue burden on her and invade her rights to privacy and claims her husband has made a decision to not drag her into his counter-suit to testify.
Although the deposition is for a civil case, anything she says theoretically could be used in a criminal prosecution – and Cosby is under indictment in Pennsylvania.
Security is incredibly tight at the hotel for Camille’s protection, with guards stationed at every entrance and a curtain and no entry sign hanging in front of the room she is in for the day at the facility.
After a judge ruled Friday that Camille Cosby’s deposition must proceed, defense lawyers filed an emergency motion requesting a delay. Her lawyers had previously attempted to block her from testifying altogether in December, but the motion was rejected last month.
Jacqueline Newman, a family law specialist at Berkman Bottger Newman & Rodd, said attorneys may hope to use questioning as a way to pressure Cosby into settling the suit.
The Cosbys have a home in Shelburne Falls, about an hour’s drive from Springfield, where the lawsuit, seeking unspecified damages, was filed.
“All she could possibly know is what her husband of five decades said to her”, Slavitt wrote. Cosby faces three felony charges of aggravated indecent assault.
“It’s fruitful in a sense and frustrating in a sense”, Cammarata said, referring to the fact that the deposition wasn’t completed Monday.
