Active shooter at Arkansas State University
A day earlier, Bartelt referred on his Facebook page to an August 2012 accident in which he was critically injured while a student at ASU-Newport.
The 47-year-old was taken into custody Thursday after driving his truck onto the campus and triggering a lockdown.
Bartelt told police he was on several psychiatric medications and painkillers, according to the report released Friday.
As for the suspect’s motive, the university cited Police Chief Elliot as having indicated that the authorities have yet to determine the answer. He said charges were likely but did not know what they would be.
Final exams scheduled for Wednesday will be rescheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 16. As a precautionary measure, we will increase the number of patrol officers working on campus for the remainder of the week, but we have no indication of any further threats to the campus community. On the other hand, Arkansas State University policy restricts students from having guns on campus.
About 2 p.m., police negotiators could be heard shouting to the gunman through bullhorns that they wanted to help him. Earlier Thursday, the university was placed on lockdown after the man drove his truck onto the center of campus and displayed a weapon.
The man drove to the middle of campus in a green pickup truck with propane tanks in the back that were “ready to blow”. The suspect was captured with no reported injuries or shots fired.
Elliott said at a Thursday news conference that Bartelt never pointed a weapon toward officers.
A later Twitter post said there were no shots fired or any reports of injuries.
University officials alerted students with a mass text message around 1:30 p.m.
ASU Chief of Police Randy Martin praised the handling of the incident by his officers and those of the Jonesboro department and Craighead County Sheriff’s Office. Spokesman Paul Holmes says the man is in a pickup truck outside the student union.
Jonesboro police confirm to Channel 7 News there is a man with a shotgun in a vehicle on the grass by the student union.
