Activist: Immigration officers detain 10 workers in Oregon

The four kitchen employees were arrested as part of a recent surge in Immigration & Customs Enforcement activity, said Stephen Converse, the attorney representing them.

No person will be detained exclusively on the basis of immigration status or on the belief that the person is in the United States illegally. The program gives these law enforcement officers the authority to stop, interrogate, and arrest anyone they believe to be unauthorized immigrants.

“The scope was very narrow and now it’s been widened”, said Chelsea Police Chief Brian Kyes.

“Crimes may go unreported because victims fear their immigration status may be reported to immigration officials”.

“I reached out to ICE and was told that nothing has changed so far”, FitzSimons said. “Should they go, should they not go?”

In two memos published February 20, the Department of Homeland Security outlined guidelines that White House officials said would enhance enforcement of immigration laws inside the country as well as prevent further unauthorized immigration into the U.S.
