Actress Ellen Page Grills Ted Cruz at State Fair -And It’s Glorious
Ted Cruz (Texas) on Friday at the Iowa State Fair about workplace protections for gay employees. “What about the question about LGBT people being fired for being gay [or] trans?” she asked, wearing a cap and sunglasses.
“We don’t have a right to force people to abandon their faith”, he said, which was not what she was saying at all. The actress then asked him if he would use that same argument when discussing segregation.
“I don’t know, I’d love to talk to Obama about that”, Page said.
“Too bad Ted Cruz didn’t spend some more formative years in Canada and realize how great public health care is”, the Oscar-nominated actress tweeted back in August 2013.
Cruz attempted to shut down the actress, claiming: “I’m happy to answer your question, but not to have a back-and-forth debate”.
“No, for living according to their faith”, said Cruz.
The senator went on to say that the much bigger challenge for gay people comes from the Middle East, where they are deeply persecuted by the Iranian government as well as the leadership of ISIS.
“Christians in Russian Federation, Christians in Uganda, Christians in Jamaica, all persecuting gays to a really, really violent extent”, Page added. “Iran is executing homosexuals”, he said.
During his campaign, Cruz has consistently mentioned he would stand up for the religious liberty of Americans, including those who have closed their businesses after backlash due to religious beliefs.
Following his first day, Cruz said he would work to repeal Obamacare, instruct Congress to adopt a flat tax, secure the U.S.-Mexico border and abolish the IRS.
While Page brought up the past jailing of gay men and women in the United States because of now-debunct sodomy laws, Cruz mentioned the execution of gay men by Islamic State militants.
Page said, “Yeah, yeah, I appreciate it”.
