Acts of service mark Martin Luther King Jr
Communities around Milwaukee gathered to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday. And he’s not the only one who understands giving time for the community as a whole.
They say Dr. King’s work has paved the way and bringing light to the different forms of discrimination. “I grew up as Dr. Martin Luther King and today is my dad’s birthday and they are three days apart”.
All proceeds benefited the Robert W. Johnson Community Center capital improvement and scholarship funds. “I think it’s super important that we’re finally talking about it and addressing this issue”.
Committee members said the annual scholarships are given out to honor Dr. King’s dream, by investing in the future. The Columbia chapter of the Martin Luther King Memorial Association organized the event.
Thousands of people lined the streets of South Los Angeles to for a Martin Luther King Jr. Boyd said that that is a reminder that this holiday involves the rights of all people.
Scott says the recent deaths of unarmed black men at the hands of police officers is a testament that more work needs to be done.
The sorority, which is sponsored by United Technologies Corp., has raised more than $300,000 over the past 31 years, said Veronica DeLandro, president of the Hartford Alumnae Chapter.
He said Dr. King’s dream is in disrepair “because of neglect, the lack of courage, the lack of sacrifice and the lack of direction”.
“I’m 44 and I’ve been coming down since I was a freshman in high school”, said James Watkins, a Spokane resident.
“You have whites and blacks out here, together as one”, 17-year-old Angel Escobar said.
“He will never be forgotten and we can’t forget him, and that’s why every year we come back and participate in this great affair”, Mars Gray told News 3. I mean there are 300 people taking part today and they will sort and pack 30,000 pounds of produce for us to give out.
