Adam Johnson: I panicked in police interview

I had all these thoughts going through my mind about everything.

“I was panicking. I was just worrying about everything, my career, my family, I was honestly in turmoil”.

The teenager told police that Johnson’s groin area was shaved of pubic hair.

Mr Thomas said Johnson went on to apologise to the girl and added: ” She’s a child and ought to have been safe in my company”.

Johnson was also questioned about his meeting with the girl, when she alleges she performed oral sex on him.

In cross-examination, Johnson said he did not think of himself as an honourable man. He agreed that he was arrogant and audacious and “lived the life of a celebrity”.

Reading the statement to the court, Daniel Thomas, junior prosecutor in the case, said: “I accept the stupidity of my actions”. “You were adored by your fans”.

He said he arrived on time and faced no fine – but agreed he was prepared to pay the late money to spend time with the girl.

Earlier today, Johnson admitted that he gave the 15-year-old girl his phone number because he wanted a sexual relationship with her.

The prosecutor said Johnson knew he would have to sign the sex offender’s register once he had pleaded guilty, which could bring an end to his career.

He accepted the girl was a “massive” fan who idolised him and said he did not take advantage of her when asked by Miss Blackwell.

Blackwell: “Something which you knew from the start but were there 60,000 very good reasons each week?”

Ms Sampson said she later received a call from the football club about apparent contact on social media between the girl and another player.

Miss Blackwell described how he threw his shirt into the crowd after a match against Liverpool in which he scored a goal. Because you were the adult here, weren’t you?

The court heard that Johnson wanted to feel the girl’s body and touch her private parts, but he didn’t. “It was what the police asked me, I told them word for word what I said”.

The father-of-one was giving evidence for the second day during the eighth day of his trial.

The footballer has previously pleaded guilty to one count of sexual activity with a child and one charge of grooming.

He denies two further counts of sexual activity with a child.

The trial was adjourned until Tuesday morning.
