Additional Security at British Mosques Following Terror Attack in London
Footage has emerged of the moment the suspect in the Finsbury Park mosque attack was arrested by police. Our thoughts are with the family of the victim and all those who are injured.
The Prime Minister also said the attack came at “a hard time” for London in the immediate aftermath of both the Grenfell tower blaze and the London Bridge terror attack.
The attack occurred just outside of a mosque in north London, police said.
Responding to the attack near a London mosque on Sunday night, British Prime Minister Theresa May described it as a “sickening” attempt to destroy the freedom of religion in the country. The video of the crash early Monday morning was accessed by the AP.
The incident follows only weeks after three Islamic attackers drove a van into pedestrians onLondon Bridge and then went on a knife rampage through busy Borough Market, killing eight people.
Last week, Chesterfield’s Muslim community said it felt “under threat” following recent terrorist attack in Manchester and London.
A Metropolitan police spokesperson said “The driver of the van was detained by the public and was later handed over to the police”.
A 48-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder.
“This is being treated as a terrorist attack and the Counter-Terrorism Command is investigating.”
She said additional police have been deployed at British mosques to protect Muslims following the attack.
An imam prevented other people at the scene from taking revenge on the man, Kacimi said.
Speaking to ITV’s This Morning, Mr Aidroos said they tackled and protected the man from an angry crowd, despite him saying he wanted to “kill more” Muslims. “He targeted Muslims this time”, the witness, identified only as Rayan, said.
Early witness reports suggested that people had been struck as they left late-night prayers for the holy month of Ramadan.
Transportation officials said roads in the area were being closed. According to the Muslim Council of Britain and eyewitnesses, many of those injured were worshippers leaving the mosque. All of the victims were from the Muslim community.
Helicopters buzzed overhead, and ambulances and police cars raced to the scene.
Further details were not immediately available.
