Adele Reportedly Rejects Streaming Services For Her New Album 25…Temporarily
The release of 25, then, is one in which all the excitement is virtual – in which all the conversation about the record is happening on social media, not among fans standing in lines in the cold.
Don’t expect to say “Hello” to Adele’s upcoming album “25” on streaming services such as Spotify and Apple Music.
Beyoncé made her eponymous album exclusive to Itunes users in 2013, and Coldplay fans using Spotify have previously had to wait several months to be able to stream their favourite artists’ music from the service.
“Hello”, the first single, sold more than 1.1 million copies in its first week, the largest ever for a download, according to NIELSEN.
When Adele’s “Hello” video dropped in October, it trounced Taylor Swift’s staggering “Bad Blood” Vevo record with over 27.7 million views in 24 hours. “We hope that she will give those fans the opportunity to enjoy “25” on Spotify alongside “19” and “21” very soon”, Spotify said in a statement.
He likened holding back 25 to “short-term arbitrage”, capitalizing on Adele’s popularity without drawing more paying customers to streaming services, which could in turn support other artists. But when Adele sings: “When the evening shadows and the stars appear / And there is no one there to dry your tears / I could hold you for a million years / To Make you feel my love”, it doesn’t matter who wrote the song.
Though, now the Billboard 200 includes streaming data in its metrics, so how will this affect Adele’s first week album sales?
So why, after all these years, is this album the one drawing so much hype?
Coinciding with the albums release, Adele is in full promotion mode.
In a separate case, two-minute snippets of all 11 tracks from the album were reported to have been briefly available online late on Tuesday through a British online record store. No Strings Attached sold 2.415 million copies and music executives think 25 will sell 2.5 million (including 900,000 copies from digital sales).
However, there are those who have already listened to the new album, thanks to a few sketchy leaks. Her previous album topped the charts in more than 30 countries, selling 30 million copies worldwide and becoming the top Billboard 200 album of all time, which is based on chart position and puts “21” ahead of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”.
