Adele’s ’25’ sells 2.3 million copies in just 3
Adele’s newest album, “25” has already sold more than 2.3 million copies in the USA alone during the first 3 days on the market, according to the Daily Mail.
Over in America, “25′ has reached sales of 1.5 MILLION (crikey), and is set to overtake *NYSNC’s first week sales record from 2000, when they sold 2.42m copies of ‘No Strings Attached”. “You don’t see this type of volume unless an artist has touched a huge share of the population”, said David Bakula, senior vice president of insights at Nielsen Music. This thing has as good a chance of hitting 3 million in one week as any record in history.
The strong three-day sales indicate the lack of streaming availability did not hurt the album, which was released on Friday. This number is absolutely stunning in an industry where sales numbers have been falling considerably.
Taylor Swift’s “1989” album was the last record to achieve the milestone when it opened with almost 1.3 million copies previous year.
Country-turned-pop star Swift has done it with her last three albums in 2014, 2012 and 2010. “As music consumption has changed over the years, to be able to sell over 2 million albums in just a couple of days is unprecedented”.
Some have pointed to the decision made by the singer to withhold the release from music streaming services such as Apple Music and Spotify.
25 was released on November 20 through XL/Columbia Records. Over the weekend, Billboard reported that “25” sold more than 900,000 copies on iTunes during the first day it was available from the digital retailer.
