Adele’s 25 sets record for new album
The latter – which went on to become the fourth-biggest selling album in the United Kingdom ever – sold 208,000 in its first week.
Adele is one of the most successful recording artists of all time, with her second album, 21, back in the charts thanks to the release of 25.
When looked at over the longer term, it has already shifted more copies than the collective total of the last nineteen number one British albums.
Just three days after its official release, Adele’s new album 25 is on track to be the fastest-selling album of all time.
Adele has now spoken out about the move, insisting she was simply sticking to the same release plan as her previous two albums and wasn’t intentionally trying to shake up the industry.
“The statistics surrounding the album are staggering, album has ever sold 800,000 copies to reach number one in the history of British music.”, said Martin Talbot – the official charts company chief executive after the album’s 100,000 downloads in a week.
Now 25 has done the seemingly impossible: It has sold more than 3 million copies in the U.S.in less than a week – and its first tracking week isn’t even over yet.
Adele recently announced that she’ll be kicking of her first tour in four years in 2016. “It was a flattering luxury knowing we sold more records than anyone in a week but it’s also nice seeing people continue to be passionate about music in the next generations”. Adele’s first single “Hello” also managed to rocket to the top on iTunes Chart in nearly 106 countries. The video logged 27 million views in the first 24 hours – a record, as were the 1.1 million digital downloads of the song, obliterating the previous record of 636,000 copies for rapper Flo Rida’s 2009 single “Right Round”. Labels don’t have a say in this type of licensing; so Adele’s new album, like Taylor Swift’s 1989 past year, still ends up streaming on Pandora.
Justin Timberlake, JC Chasez, Joey Fatone, Lance Bass and Chris Kirkpatrick sold 2.416 million copies of No Strings Attached in March 2000.
