Adele’s album 25 soars to record sales in America and Canada
As of Tuesday morning, just over three day after hitting shelves, Adele’s 25 has sold more than 2,433,000 albums. Having blocked the record from streaming services such as Spotify, fans could only get hold of “25” by purchasing the physical album instead of merely streaming it. Album purchases signify a more steady profit for the artist.
“25” is the primary full length work in four years by Adele, whose last record “21” was the top-seller in America for two straight years and by far the largest launch this century in her native Britain. Taylor Swift’s “1989” album was the last record to achieve the milestone when it opened previous year with almost 1.3 million copies for the week. Before Adele’s startling debut, “Purpose” had the highest first-week sales for an album in 2015.
LIkely to be beaten by Adele this week, the 2000 boy band album sold 2.4 copis in its first week, despite touch competition from fellow boy band Backstreet Boys.
No word from Justin Timberlake’s Twitter account yet (no surprise there), but Joey Fatone spoke to Billboard about how he’s thrilled for Adele.
The Official Charts Company confirmed the numbers and notes that “Be Here Now” was released on a Thursday so only had three days of sales registering towards its first chart week.
For the all-time rankings of most albums ever sold in a week, early 2000s acts are clustered near the top of the list.
The album is the first by the singer since releasing “21” in 2011, which sold more than 30 million copies worldwide. Adele has outsold her competitors in the industry by a much, much wider margin as compared to *NSYNC, partly due to her controversial decision to withhold the album from major streaming services.
“We love and respect Adele, as do her 24 million fans on Spotify”, a Spotify spokesman said in response to the news.
