Adele’s new album not on stream for online fans
It marks a departure from the star’s previous relationship with the digital companies, as her albums 19 and 21 and new hit single Hello are all available for streaming, and comes after Taylor Swift pulled her work from Spotify. A representative for the British singer declined to comment.
Adele’s new album 25 will not be available on music streaming services including Spotify and Apple Music.
Adele is one of a small number of A-list artists who can make potentially more money by foregoing sites like Spotify and Apple Music.
“We love and respect Adele, as do her 24 million fans on Spotify”, the Spotify spokesperson said.
The music label has indicated to streaming executives that “25” will stay off Spotify-like services indefinitely, but that calculation could change in the coming months.
“She’s benefiting from paid subscriptions, but she’s using this as an opportunity to try and sell more CD’s or downloads”, he said. The album is predicted to push well over 1 million copies in its debut week.
1989 went on to become the biggest selling album in the world in 2014 with estimated sales of more than 8.5 million copies.
There’s been much debate about this over the past couple of weeks, and if true it will be the third year in a row that Spotify has missed out on the biggest album of the year. Swift made the decision after writing an op-ed on how artists should value their music and not offer it for free.
The most anxiously anticipated album of the year is nearly here.
According to The Verge, the decision to bypass popular streaming services could have major commercial and cultural ramifications.
Artists, however, were earning less than one cent per play through a few of these services, which is why Swift withdrew her music.
