Adele’s new album won’t be available on streaming services
“Live in London”, recorded November 2, is set to air on BBC One today on the eve of her album’s release.
Spotify also confirmed that its followers would not have access to the new album.
“We love and respect Adele, as do her 24 million fans on Spotify”, Spotify said in a statement. “We hope that she will give those fans the opportunity to enjoy “25” on Spotify alongside “19” and “21” very soon”.
Tyler Goldman, chief executive, North America, of music streaming company Deezer told Reuters that the service would not offer “25” at launch.
In the special, hit singer Adele will perform her most popular songs alongside tunes from her latest album, 25. However, Adele’s spokesman declined to comment to the Times and TIME has not independently verified the report.
The show has been bought by broadcasters in France (France2), Australia (Nine Network), New Zealand (TV3), Ireland (RTE), Finland (YLE), Norway (NRK), Sweden (SVT), Belgium (VRT), Italy (Mediaset), Spain (Canal+), Canada (CTV/VRAK), Netherlands (NPO3) and Germany (ZDF).
It has been 3 years since Adele last released an album, which is an awfully long period of time to wait inbetween albums, but she made a triumphant return late last month with the lead single from the album, “Hello”.
Her Grammy and Brit Award-winning album 21 has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide since it came out in 2011. In 2012, Taylor Swift’s “Red” wasn’t as far behind “21” as Buble’s album had been, but Adele’s work still outsold Swift’s by more than a million.
“This is a minor issue for Adele, but a major issue for the streaming services”, said Mark Mulligan, a digital-media analyst with Midia Research. “One individual artist is not going to change the inevitability of streaming”, he said.
