Adele scores another winner as 25 becomes ‘fastest selling record in British
“The statistics surrounding the album are staggering, topped by the simple fact that no album has ever sold 800,000 copies to reach number one in the history of British music”.
The previous album sales record was set by Oasis’ Be Here Now (696,000) in 1997. Some have even speculated that it could even go on to overtake Queen’s Greatest Hits to become Britain’s biggest selling album of all time.
The singer’s latest album, “25”, surpassed 3 million in US sales on Wednesday, according to Nielsen Music – a sales-week threshold that is completely unheard of for the music industry.
Industry forecasters suggest the album could finish the week with 2.9 million sold, because Adele can shatter even numbers by the power of her voice alone.
25, which will be accompanied by Adele’s first tour dates in five years, has enjoyed more success than its predecessors, 21 and 19.
It has also sold more downloads than any other album in British history – 252,423.
Meanwhile, after smashing the record for first week sales in the US previously held by N’Sync’s “No Strings Attached” album, Adele has added another notch to her belt by breaking the same record in her home territory of the UK.
Her new release, 25, has sold more than 800,000 copies in its first week, shifting more copies than the next 86 albums combined.
Adele has stormed to the top of the United Kingdom album charts with the biggest single-week sales ever.
The promotional window for Adele’s new record still has a month of the buoyant pre-Christmas sale period to run, as well as next year’s Mother’s Day and the Brit Awards.
In this week’s charts Elvis Presley climbed back up a place to number two with If I Can Dream and Justin Bieber’s objective sits at three.
The singer has also just announced her first tour since 2011, playing in arenas across Europe from next February. It is the first time in thirty years that an artist has managed the feat, when Madonna’s 1985 hits, Into The Groove and Holiday, took the top spots.
