Adele to break U.S. records
The only album to have a bigger first-day debut was Be Here Now by Oasis, which sold 424,000 copies in 1997 – an era in which overall music sales were much higher.
Adele tops-off the record with the final bonus track “Why Do You Love Me”.
And, of course, her last album, 21, sold more than 11 million copies in the United States and 30 million copies worldwide, making it one of the most successful albums of all time-even more impressive in the current era of declining album sales. I think it’ll sell around 250,000 in Canada, about 2.6 million in the U.S. and 650,000 in the UK. This will be the third time that Adele has had the best-selling album of the year. Welcome back to the charts Adele, we’ve really missed you!
In a message on her Twitter feed on Friday, Adele did not mention the decision not to stream the album but said she hoped fans would enjoy the music. “She connects with fans in such a way that they want to invest in her, and her music”. Only two albums have ever gone on to sell more than 500,000 in their first week on sale.
The album 25 was not made available through any of the streaming services other artists so often use and USA Today reported that anyone who wanted access to the album had to pay up. “When the pain cuts you deep / When the night keeps you from sleeping / Just look and you will see / That I will be your remedy”, and, “Your love, it is my truth / And I will always love you”, make you want to go hug someone. Nielsen’s tracking week runs from Friday through THursday, so 25’s first week ends on November 26. She expands her circle of collaborators slightly on “25”, but even her more offbeat picks – such as Ariel Rechtshaid, who produced great left-field pop albums by Haim and Sky Ferreira – turn in songs that fit squarely in her wheelhouse. Adele, besides Beyonce and Taylor Swift, is one of the few singers that, due to her popularity, can negotiate separately on the conditions concerning to the distribution of her music.
In a booming voice sure to leave many listeners in tears or at least with goose bumps, Adele sings over the piano, “All I ask is / If this is my last night with you / Hold me like I’m more than just a friend / Give me a memory I can use…” The more sonically interesting soundscapes paired with her soothing emotive vocals and dramatic flair make “25” her best work yet, easily outshining the Motown-inspired soul jams of her previous albums.
