Adrian Gonzalez leads Los Angeles Dodgers to walk-off victory
He didn’t and the Dodgers won. Now the betting odds for the game have the Dodgers favored at home to get the victory.
The first-place Dodgers’ lead increased to 4 ½ games over the Giants in the longest game by innings between the teams since May 2, 1995.
Adrian Gonzalez walked off the Dodgers with a bases-loaded, no-out single in the 14th inning, which gave Los Angeles a 5-4 win over the Giants and a 4.5-game lead over their rival in the National League West.
The $300 million Dodgers will be awaiting with their co-aces lined up for Tuesday and Wednesday, not to mention an improved bullpen – their relievers allowed one run in 13 innings during the five-game surge – and a new starting center fielder in versatile rookie Kike Hernandez.
Chris Hatcher (2-5) pitched three innings for the win. He also rued Jimmy Rollins bloop hit that put him in the stretch. With the race in the NL West tight, it wouldn’t be surprising to see more entertaining encounters in this three game series. He grounded out to end the inning.
Gonzalez and Andre Ethier homered for the tying and go-ahead runs in the sixth inning, giving the Dodgers a 4-3 lead.
Gonzalez jumped on top of a 91 miles per hour fastball that he crushed into centerfield for his 25th home run of the season. It barely cleared the cyclone fence in right field and landed in the Giants’ bullpen.
Neither team scored in the ninth, but Los Angeles certainly had a chance to pounce.
Even if the Giants don t make any deals before 9 p.m. Pacific (the deadline to add a playoff-eligible player from outside the organization), they have reinforcements on the way.
But the Giants tied the game in the eighth inning when Marlon Byrd’s RBI double off Juan Nicasio drove in Matt Duffy. He didn’t make any fielding errors, though he couldn’t really criticize his pitching, either. Peavy laid down a weak bunt attempt that died a couple feet in front of home plate, allowing Dodgers catcher Yasmani Grandal to throw out Blanco at second base.
Byrd’s RBI infield single with two outs in the inning plated Aoki and Duffy for a 3-1 San Francisco advantage. The Giants got three runs off him in the third inning with scarcely a hard-hit ball. With two outs and runners on second and third base, Byrd poked a slow roller between first and second base. Anderson has faced the Giants four times this year, and is 1-2 with a 4.71 ERA (his highest against any opponent this season). He placed his glove on the bench, crouched, and shouted again.
What he said can not be printed in a family newspaper, but suffice it to say the urgency of the game wasn’t lost on the Dodgers’ starting pitcher Monday.
Peavy, who began the night 14-3 with a 2.30 ERA in 27 career starts against the Dodgers, surrendered four runs on six hits in 5 2/3 innings. He’s hit. 274 but has hit three home runs and driven in 17 runs in the 10 games. He thought his drive in the 12th inning was gone off the bat.
Utley led off the eighth inning with a double that caromed off the leg of Giants pitcher Javier Lopez.
“I asked five of their players when they reached base and they all said it was a hit”, Gonzalez said. Utley was on third base when right-hander Sergio Romo relieved Lopez. The key at-bat was pinch hitter Scott Van Slyke’s pop-up to shortstop… Koufax punched out 12 Phillies and walked one, joining Bob Feller as the only pitchers of the modern era to throw three no-hitters (until Nolan Ryan and his seven came along).
After getting blown out by an aggregate 38-11 score in a three-game series sweep by the New York Yankees, the Braves’ offense was no match for journeyman Chris Narveson (2-1), a journeyman making his second start since 2012.
Ruggiano, who can play all three outfield positions, had a.296/.385/.514 slash line in 49 games for the Mariners’ Triple-A affiliate. Monday s game is the last one they ll have to play with a 25-man roster.
When he was president in Tampa Bay, Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman acquired Ruggiano from the Dodgers in July 2006.
After the boos, Dodger Stadium was mostly quiet if not anxious before Adrian Gonzalez came to the plate with one out and one on in the sixth. A crowd of 40,851 attended….
