AFC West-leading Broncos hand Chargers fifth straight home loss
The defense allowed the Broncos to roll up 134 rushing yards. Rivers had a huge game last week against Jacksonville with 300 yards and four touchdowns, but facing the Broncos will be considerably more hard. Today’s game has an afternoon start time and airs on a network TV channel in some markets as well as being available as a live stream online option.
And the next possession that San Diego had, try as they might, they just could not put together an effective drive and had a lot of mistakes. Former San Diego State player Ronnie Hillman led the Broncos in rushing with 56 yards on 19 carries.
Running back Melvin Gordon, the Chargers’ first-round draft pick, lost another fumble and was benched.
The San Diego defense had one impressive play as Brock tried to go deep to the end zone only to be picked off by Jason Verrett. When faced with poor starting field position, it moved the chains and ensured it wouldn’t give the ball back to San Diego in a beneficial spot. “When you’re making plays and your teammates are going out there and making plays, it’s fun”, Miller said.
But what’s not a question at all is whether the Broncos have a Super Bowl-quality defense. Philip Rivers and the Chargers were expected to contend for the playoffs, and are instead still looking for answers as they aim for the upset at home. “With a third down and 1-yard, Brock Osweiler used his 6’8″ body to get and easy first down and keep Denver driving deep into the Chargers end of the field. On the road, up 14, you make sure right there you don’t turn the ball over.
“The main thing was to start fast”, Thomas said.
It was an ugly game for the Chargers, who have been decimated by injuries all season and suffered two more big ones today.
Osweiler led the offense on an 8-play, 76-yard to open the game that ended with a 3-yard TD pass to Demaryius Thomas. A missed field goal by Josh Lambo prevented them from keeping up with the Broncos, and a second-quarter field goal proved to be too little, too late.
The opening drive “was our best, running and throwing”, Thomas said.
Anderson has rushed for over 160 yards combined with two touchdowns in the past two games and after putting up a paltry 2.7 yards per carry before the bye week, Anderson is averaging over six yards per carry since that time. The Broncos are very good on that side of the football and will bring consistent pressure on Philip Rivers and the Chargers.
