Affluent teen captured after pizza order by cellphone
Ethan Couch is pictured in this undated handout photograph made available to Reuters on December 29, 2015 by the Jalisco state prosecutor office.
CNN first reported Monday evening that the Couches had been tracked down in Mexico.
Asked about USA media reports that a pizza order in Puerto Vallarta from a cellphone had led to the arrests, Anderson said it was more than a single incident.
The then-16-year-old was sentenced by a Texas judge to probation and a California rehab center after pleading guilty to four counts of manslaughter after driving drunk and killing four people in a high-speed crash outside Fort Worth.
Ethan Couch was on the run with his mother Tonya Couch.
Deputy U.S. Marshal Eugene Hwang said Thursday that he couldn’t immediately comment.
The official isn’t saying whether Couch is being transported by air or ground.
Associated Press writers Elizabeth Rivera, Emily Schmall, E. Eduardo Castillo, Peter Orsi and Mark Stevenson contributed.
Eisenman didn’t know why Tonya Couch came through Los Angeles or when she would be transported. The person was not authorized to discuss the case and revealed the information on condition of anonymity. They contacted Mexican authorities, who arrested the pair yesterday. Law enforcement sources confirm to ABC News that the Couches managed to elude authorities for a time by using at least one throw away phone.
Known as an “amparo”, or protection, such appeals try to block a government action.
U.S. Marshal Rick Taylor described the work of local, federal and global authorities to track down the Couches as “nothing more than a textbook case” of collaboration.
A federal judge has three days to rule on whether Couch’s appeal is well-founded. Even if his conduct is not classified as a felony, however, she could still face up to a year in jail for hindering apprehension as a misdemeanor offense.
Such appeals are unique in Mexico because they are precautionary. Authorities had been investigating that video as a potential parole violation.
“We didn’t think justice was served”, said Anderson.
The immigration official spoke on condition of anonymity because he or she was not authorized to be quoted by name.
It’s incomprehensible that Ethan Couch will be free to sleep in his own bed anytime soon, although you might have thought that back when Jean Boyd had the case. Instead, she kept Couch out of jail partly under a state initiative to focus juvenile delinquents on rehabilitation instead of punishment. “People in this agency, who had to work that crime scene and deal with the victim’s families and do everything they did, took it very personally”.
The Attorney-General’s Office in Mexico did not respond immediately to calls seeking information.
After the pair’s capture Monday in the Pacific resort town of Puerto Vallarta, prosecutors said Tuesday they are unsure of the extent to which they may be punished – owing to the complexities of the juvenile and adult court systems in Texas that officials now find themselves navigating.
Ethan Couch’s attorney, Reagan Wynn, said in a statement he had not had the chance to speak with his client and did not expect to be able to until Couch was back in the United States. She told them where Couch and his mother were staying, and Mexican detectives located the apartment and staked it out.
If he is not certified as an adult before his birthday, Couch would be released from probation.
They were expected to be returned to Houston on a commercial flight later on Tuesday from Jalisco’s state capital, Guadalajara, Vera said.
A Texas sheriff says an arrest warrant will be issued for mother of a teenager found in Mexico after fleeing probation after killing four people in a drunken-driving wreck and invoking an “affluenza” defense.
DA Wilson said that when they go before a judge in January, “Our request of the court is going to be to transfer his probation to the adult court and deal with him in the adult system, where we no longer have to be concerned about the “best interest of the child” or the child defendant in this case”.
