‘Affluenza’ mother enters no plea at Texas arraignment
Anderson met Tonya Couch at DFW Airport personally, he said, and rode shotgun in the Tarrant County van that returned the fugitive from Fort Worth.
Attorneys representing Tonya said in a statement that she has not done anything illegal, as reported by Yahoo News.
The pair fled to Mexico in late December after a video posted on social media appeared to show him at a beer pong party.
The indictment and expected firing of the Texas state trooper who arrested Sandra Bland, a black woman who later died in jail, was a “bittersweet” moment for her sister.
Breitbart Texas reported that high-profile Mexican lawyer Fernando Benítez is fighting the teen’s extradition back to the U.S. Benítez filed a petition claiming Couch’s constitutional and civil rights may have been violated, highlighting that the teen’s U.S. crimes should have no bearing on Mexican officials or Mexican courts. “We think anything $25,000 or under would be fair”, she said. She did not enter a plea because her attorney was not present for the arraignment.
Tonya Couch will have to wear an ankle monitor if she makes bail, state District Judge Wayne Salvant told the mother of troubled teen Ethan Couch.
Anderson wouldn’t comment on Couch’s bond or the possibility of her being considered a flight risk.
Tonya Couch was housed in a maximum security cell by herself Thursday night at the Lon Evans Correctional Facility, Tarrant County Sheriff Dee Anderson said.
She was detained in Los Angeles on a no-bail hold for Texas authorities after being deported from Mexico last week. “It’s not a question if he’s coming back; it’s a question of when he’s coming”. He added, saying, “We’re not concerned at this point”.
A judge set a bond hearing for her on Monday morning.
“Couch, you may recall, earned himself his own Wikipedia entry after killing four people and seriously injuring two others in a vehicular accident in 2013”.
Meanwhile Ethan Couch remains in Mexico, where he and his mother were arrested last week.
Tonya and Ethan spent almost a month hiding out in Mexico and evading the law.
After being convicted of four counts of intoxication manslaughter Ethan was sentenced to therapy and 10 years probation.
