‘Affluenza’ teen’s mom jailed in L.A.; he’s still in Mexico
Lawyers for Tonya Couch released a statement Thursday confirming she was in the custody of California authorities in Los Angeles.
Judge Jean Boyd sentenced Couch to probation over the objections of prosecutors who asked for 20 years’ detention.
Anyone outside that courtroom could have predicted Couch would find himself in trouble with the law in short order.
Half of the Couch duo is back in the United States.
The attorney did acknowledge the case, and the lives lost and families destroyed by Ethan Couch’s fatal crash.
“Fred Couch has been cooperating with officials from the Tarrant County District Attorneys Office and the U.S. Marshals Service in their search for Ethan”, the statement from Lance Evans reads, according to ABC News.
Ethan Couch was transported late Wednesday from a detention center in Guadalajara to one in Mexico City, an official with Mexico’s National Immigration Institute told the Associated Press.

He has been transferred from Puerto Vallarta to a detention facility in Mexico City, Mexican immigration officials said. He could be held in Mexico for at least two weeks.

“They have done everything that they can so far to avoid being accountable, or avoid being brought to justice”, he said. A resort employee tells the Dallas Morning News that Ethan went to a “gentleman’s club” one night but didn’t have enough money to cover his tab.

Ethan Couch probably will be able to stay in Mexico for longer than the next three days because of the holidays, Richard Hunter, chief deputy U.S. Marshal for the southern district of Texas, said in a Wednesday news conference. Fred Couch, now 50, told a social worker that their marriage had been a “mistake from the start”, Johnson County court documents show.
Couch was declared officially missing December 10 when he did not appear at a mandatory meeting with his probation officer.
