‘Affluenza’ Teen’s Mom Released From Jail After Reduced Bond
Couch is charged with hindering the apprehension of her son, Ethan Couch.
Ethan Couch is in an immigration detention facility in Mexico and fighting deportation back to the United States. While free on bond, Couch must report to authorities on a weekly basis, reside in Tarrant County with her 29-year-old son and his family, and will be placed under 24-hour house arrest. Earlier this month, she complained about the conditions she has faced at the Texas jail where she is being held on $1 million bond. In a Fort Worth, Texas, courtroom, Steven McWilliams said he was going to have to pay his mother’s legal bills, and the judge chose to lower the bond to $75,000. After an ill-fated sojourn to Mexico with her son Ethan following his skipping a probation appointment, Tonya Couch was accused of helping him flee. A psychologist who testified for his defense said Couch suffered from “affluenza,” suggesting that his wealthy upbringing contributed to his reckless decisions.
The mother of a Texas teenager who used an “affluenza” defense after killing four people in a drunken wreck has posted a reduced bond and is expected to be released soon.
Anderson told reporters on Monday there was a possibility Tonya Couch could flee again.
The affluenza diagnosis, which is not recognised by the American Psychiatric Association, was widely ridiculed. If this multi-millionaire can not afford to pay her bills, then she should languish in jail until her trial just like every other person who can not pay bail.
At the hearing, Couch’s lawyer asked that her bond be reduced to $15,000. The infamous Harley Davidson Ford F-150 in which the two Couches went to Mexico isn’t Tonya’s her attorney’s said – it belongs to Fred Couch’s sheet metal company.
Tonya Couch was brought back to Texas last week after being caught with 18-year-old Ethan Couch in the Mexican resort town of Puerto Vallarta. The group reportedly plans to use the petition to urge a judge to transfer Couch’s probation sentence to the adult system before a hearing set for January 19. If Ethan Couch was drinking, it would violate his probation and could lead to jail time.
