‘Affluenza’ teen’s mom returned to Texas to face charge
Tarrant County Sheriff Dee Anderson said Tonya Couch was “quiet, reserved, respectful” on the ride from DFW to the jail in downtown Fort Worth.
Ethan Couch is on probation after using an Affluenza defense in a fatal drunk driving trial.
Ethan Couch’s deportation proceedings have stalled in Mexico, according to AP.
Airport police officers escorted Tonya Couch, who was sporting a navy blue colored jacket and black trousers, off of a flight after it landed at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.
While the 38-year-old mother is finally back in North Texas, getting her here was anything but simple.
Tonya Couch, the mom of the so-called “affluenza teen”, is back in Tarrant County, TX.
“If justice had been served originally … we wouldn’t be spending all this time and taxpayers money”, Anderson said, referring to the extensive manhunt for Tonya and Ethan Couch.
Tonya and Ethan spent almost a month hiding out in Mexico and evading the law.
“Couch, you may recall, earned himself his own Wikipedia entry after killing four people and seriously injuring two others in a vehicular accident in 2013”. She is expected to be arraigned Friday on a charge of hindering the apprehension of a felon.
Ethan Couch remains in Mexico, where he may choose to contest his deportation; a judge granted him a stay last week that halted the deportation proceedings.
Once she is back, she will be held on a bond of $1 million. The decision to move Couch was made because the Mexico City facility for detaining migrants is larger and better equipped to hold someone for days or weeks.
Tonya Couch faces a charge of hindering the apprehension of a felon.
Anderson wouldn’t comment on Couch’s bond or the possibility of her being considered a flight risk.
He received only probation after a defense expert argued Couch had been coddled too much by his wealthy parents, a condition the expert called “affluenza”.
Couch, 48, left the custody of the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department this morning, though it is unclear if she will have a court appearance today after inmate processing. After authorities had examined the video further, they determined that Ethan and his mother appear to be celebrating their plan to flee to Mexico.
