After 6-month run, Trump ousts chief of staff Reince Priebus
Scaramucci accused Priebus of being behind the leaking of unflattering news stores, a cardinal in Trump’s eyes.
President Donald Trump named John Kelly as his new Chief of Staff on July 28, ousting Reince Priebus.
It would appear that this different direction is John Kelly, Donald Trump’s pick to replace Priebus.
“We’re seeing clear evidence that all of these distractions are standing in the way of their ability to achieve legislative accomplishments”, said Republican strategist Alice Stewart, a top aide to Senator Ted Cruz’s presidential campaign previous year.
The announcement capped a fraught 24 hours in which the president’s advisers waited for a change they had long anticipated.
In a pull-no-punches, impromptu CNN interview that he said was authorized by the president, Anthony Scaramucci went after chief of staff Reince Priebus in graphic terms.
Priebus told news outlet CNN that he had resigned Thursday and was accepted by Trump. Sanders said Priebus was loyal in his dedication to the President.
I did not have the sense – and by many accounts, lots of people didn’t have the sense – that Reince Priebus was ever really able to fill that role, that the president really never just – never allowed him to fill that traditional role. Priebus took the return flight to Washington, which had to circle the runway due to a storm, his fate sealed in the tweets that were sent by the president just as he stepped off the plane. “I think things are going well”, he said a few days before the election.
BROOKS: Well, you know, as a New Yorker, I want to apologize on behalf of 8 million New Yorkers to the whole country for the way we talk, though even by our standards Scaramucci is a bit of an extreme, extreme outlier. In a highly unusual arrangement, Trump said at the outset that Priebus and chief strategist Steve Bannon would serve as “equal partners” in implementing his agenda.
White House press secretary Sean Spicer resigned last week after Scaramucci was hired.
“Unbelievable”, said former New Hampshire GOP Chair Jennifer Horn as she processed the news.
House Speaker Paul Ryan, who, like Priebus, is from Wisconsin, issued a statement that gushed praise on Preibus, but was guarded about Kelly.
“Oh, Bill Shine is coming in”, Scaramucci said to Lizza, imitating Priebus.
“He has achieved so much, and he has done it all with class”, Ryan said.
You’ve heard the old saw – don’t do more than one of changing house, job or partner at the same time. Retired Gen. James Mattis is Trump’s defense secretary, and Trump’s first choice for national security adviser was retired Army Lt. Gen. Mike Flynn.
Many Democrats joined Senate Republicans in confirming him to the position on an overwhelming basis, with 88 votes in favor. He had been leading DHS’ recent surge in efforts to crackdown on illegal immigration – a core campaign promise by Trump.
It came after Priebus had traveled to Long Island with Trump on Friday; the President delivered a speech on the dangers posed by the MS-13 gang.
John Kelly is a battle-hardened commander who would bring a background of military discipline and order to President Donald Trump’s roiling White House as the new chief of staff.
She warned against his appointment, saying “no Washington insider, regardless of who it is, should serve as President Trump’s chief of staff”. In 42 years of active service as a U.S. Marine, Kelly worked his way up from enlisted grunt to four-star general, serving in both Iraq wars and a number of other deployments.
“This will be baptism by fire”, former U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Philip Crowley said on Twitter on Friday.
Now Trump is gambling on US Marine General John Kelly, who until Friday was his homeland security secretary.
