After A Rough Week, Trump Course Corrects On Immigration
Pence, Conway and other surrogates said the main tenets of Trump’s immigration plan still will include building a wall along the southern US border and making Mexico pay for it, no path to legalization or citizenship for people here illegally and stronger border enforcement.
Asked whether the “deportation force” proposal Trump laid out in November is still in place, Pence replied: “Well, what you heard him describe there, in his usual plainspoken, American way, was a mechanism, not a policy”.
Trump, who promises to deliver a major speech Wednesday on the issue, seems to have narrowed the scope of his immigration plans and changed his tone, suggesting that he is rethinking a policy that was the lynchpin of his appeal during the Republican primaries. Trump’s campaign had scheduled it for last Thursday, then canceled it.
In Iowa, Trump promised that he will begin removing “hundreds of thousands of criminal illegal immigrants” from the USA on his first day in office if he is elected.

Trump also made a play for minority voters in this crowd of predominantly white people. And perhaps his biggest problem is the fact that he continues to underperform among college-educated whites – in part because many of them find his rhetoric offensive. Joni Ernst’s annual Roast and Ride event, Trump began by noting “there are millions of American-Americans in this country who have succeeded” but stressed that government has failed black communities, with nearly 40 percent of African-American children living in poverty. In an interview with CNN last week, his new campaign manager Kellyanne Conway said the question of whether he would create a deportation force was “to be determined”.
“All the media wants to talk about is the 11 million people – or more, or less, they have no idea what the number is because we have no control over our country”, Trump said. He explained that he’s been talking to “thousands and thousands” of people on this subject.
