After beating Aldo, McGregor wants to hold a second UFC belt
It was fast and convincing, a staggering ending to dominant champion-Aldo, a 29-year-old jiu-jitsu specialist, had been considered the UFC’s top pound-for-pound fighter. “That’s not happening. There will be a belt on one shoulder and a belt on the other shoulder”, he said.
“Of course, of course – you’ve seen it happen before and now I think I’ve seen it slip out of my hands, and I’ve seen it slip out of others hands before too”, he said.
“We need the rematch because that was not a fight, so we need to get back in here”.
Sunday morning, after allowing the dust to settle for the time being, “Notorious” penned a heartfelt message on social media, thanking his family, friends and the UFC.
McGregor (19-2) and a UFC official laid out the opportunities before him.
And though the fight didn’t last particularly long, McGregor showed the value of power. “They become better. Maybe Jose should go back and regroup”.
“72 million gate – we did 10.1”.
McGregor had predicted he would knock Aldo out inside the first round, and while many people doubted him he was true to his word and ended the fight in style.
I thought Aldo looked beaten before he got in there.
“Precision beats power, and timing beats speed”, McGregor told CBS News.
‘At 27 years of age I stand here as the unified world champion with back-to-back gate records at the MGM.
McGregor said the weight cut to 145 was rigorous, so a move to 155 for the lightweight belt would also provide some comfort. “Now I’m hearing a rumor Conor might go up, and then I heard in an interview that he might want to stick around and fight me, so I’m game”.
And McGregor revealed his plans to return home for Christmas as he mulls over his next move: “It’s Christmas, I’m thinking right now – Christmas”. “I understand why previously they would have fighters do that, because many fighters don’t fight as frequently as I do”.
So then let’s presume McGregor fights in the featherweight division again one way or another. “I said one round”. “I feel for Aldo, he was a great champion”.
Aldo, who heading into the match was regarded as the number one pound-for-pound fighter in the organization, was quick to call for a rematch and a chance to make amends for the premature stoppage.
“And that was it. I said ‘Man, I’m taking this”.
“I don’t know what I would be doing if I didn’t find martial arts and martial arts didn’t find me”, McGregor said in 2013. Whatever he said it doesn’t matter, I don’t fall for provocations.
