After Emmy win, a bittersweet moment for Julia Louis-Dreyfus
It is the fifth time in a row Louis-Dreyfus has won the award for her role in the U.S. version of BBC comedy The Thick Of It. She previously won for sitcom The New Adventures of Old Christine.
On a lighter note in her speech, Julia – whose win was her record-breaking sixth in the category – sparked laughs as she compared the current USA political landscape to that shown in her satirical TV show. “I get to make my dreams come true”. Before that, she homed in on GOP contender Donald Trump’s campaign. “Veep has torn down the wall between comedy and politics”. “Our show started as a political satire, but it now feels like a sobering documentary“.
“‘Veep’ has torn down the wall between comedy and politics”, she said, garnering laughs from the crowd.
The night’s other big victor was “The People v. O.J. Simpson”, claiming the award for best limited series, in a crowded category.
Clearly emotional and shaken up, she closed with a heartfelt dedication.
During a lighter part of her Emmy speech, Louis-Dreyfuss offered some amusing commentary about the current presidential election.
Clinton was among those she thanked in her acceptance speech.
In a segment that played before his opening monologue, host Jimmy Kimmel frantically hitchhikes to the Emmys with some of television’s most recognizable faces. “I have not always been a good man but I play one hell of a woman”.
As now-President Selina Meyer, @OfficialJLD has five Best Actress trophies, bringing her total to seven.
“Thanks to Mark Burnett, we don’t have to watch reality shows anymore, because we’re living them”, Kimmel said. When the host exited the auto, Bush proclaimed “Jeb, exclamation point!” and pumped his fist as he peeled away with a shot of his familiar “Jeb!” bumper sticker in view.
Louis-Dreyfus developed a reputation as a savvy collector who bought work by lesser-known artists such as Leonardo Cremonini and George Boorujy, and outsider artist Bill Traylor, as well as blue-chip artists such as Jean Dubuffet, Helen Frankenthaler, and Alberto Giacometti. “Did you know you can make $12 an hour driving for Uber?” he asked Kimmel.
Dame Maggie Smith was named outstanding supporting actress in a drama series for her role in Downton Abbey, beating Game Of Thrones stars Lena Headey, Emilia Clarke and M aisie Williams.
Another fan tweeted, “I’m sorry you died”. Among them is “How to Get Away with Murder” star Viola Davis, who previous year became the first woman of colour to be honoured as best drama series actress.
It’s “changing the landscape of television”.
If the stars looked especially hot this year, the mercury was involved: Temperatures were in the 90s. Along “O.J. Simpson” winners Brown and Vance, Egyptian-American Rami Malek beat veterans Kevin Spacey and Liev Schreiber to scoop his first Emmy for playing a socially inept computer hacker in “Mr. Robot”.
