After historic week, Missouri walks away with a win
The Missouri head coach announced his retirement last week due to health reasons, and Pinkel explained that decision on Monday as well.
Pinkel received multiple treatments in May and June for a type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, the statement said.
Missouri (5-5, 1-5 SEC) is coming off of a 20-16 win against BYU at Arrowhead Field in Kansas City just one day after the news leaked about Pinkel.
After the meeting, a photo appeared on Pinkel’s personal Twitter account showing Mizzou coaches and players with their arms locked, along with the hashtag of the student protest group Concerned Student 1950.
The players had a chance to show their love after the game. Under Pinkel, Missouri took home five division titles in two different conferences, winning at least 10 games in each of those seasons.
In a letter to Pinkel, former wide receiver T.J. Moe wrote on Saturday, “Thank you for showing me what it looks like to be a man. You taught us that regardless of circumstances, regardless of what we felt like, regardless of adversity, our job was to fight like hell and find a way to be successful”. Pinkel, 117-71 at Missouri since taking over in 2001, will stay on through December 31 or until athletics director Mack Rhoades hires his replacement. “I’m going to miss being around them everyday”.
Witter initially reached the redzone, but the Tigers were penalized after the play, eventually leaving them with a crucial third and short near the BYU 30 yard line.
With the resignation the Tigers returned to the field in preparation for their game against BYU, which would have cost the university financially if not played. I’m going to miss the interaction, being around them, scolding them when I have to scold them hugging them and touching them everyday.
A couple hundred people were at Missouri’s basketball arena to hear from Pinkel, who announces his plans to step down last week and disclosed that he is battling lymphoma.
“That’s the neat thing about this business”, Pinkel said.
When Pinkel arrived at Mizzou after the 2000 season, he inherited a decaying program that had been to just two bowl games in the previous 17 years. Sam went on to become the first openly gay player to be drafted by an National Football League team.
He might be remembered more as the coach who navigated a few uncharted territory for a football program.
“We really believed we would come here and win, and we thought we were going to win right up until the end”, Mendenhall said, “so this loss stings”. “It’s a tragedy that Coach Pinkel is going through what he’s going through and there’s nothing we can do about it. The thing that we can do for our coach that we love so much and hate to see him leave is play our hearts out for him”. “He really helped me as a person, and as a young man”.
MISSOURI: Freshman defensive tackle Terry Beckner Jr. will have an MRI exam for a right knee strain that could sideline him for the rest of the season. We wanted to do it for everything Columbia has been through, Mizzou has been through.
