After losing NBA Finals, Draymond Green gives LeBron James a congratulatory hug
James completed a virtuoso performance by scoring 27 points, grabbing 11 rebounds and passing off 11 assists to power Cleveland over the Golden State Warriors 93-89 and capture the best-of-seven series 4-3. No one. Not Oscar Robertson, Elgin Baylor or anyone else.
With James leading the way and winning MVP honors, the Cavs became the first team in NBA Finals history to overcome a 3-1 deficit. Not the Lakers, Celtics or anyone else.
For the first time since 1964, when the Browns ruled the NFL, Cleveland is a title town again.
Cleveland Cavaliers fans celebrate after the Cavaliers defeated the Golden State Warriors 93-89 in Game 7 of the NBA basketball Finals.
With the NBA’s Cavaliers stunning the Warriors on their own home floor with a surprising Game Seven win last night, it ended Cleveland’s 52-year title drought.
It took 7 games to decide the NBA Finals and in the end it was Cleveland who were the ones left standing.
He’s so good, so rare, that what he and his team just pulled off has everyone rushing to put him in the proper historical context. In other words, his postgame tears hadn’t dried before people started asking whether this 31-year-old, 6-foot-8, 250-pound force of nature might not be the GOAT. And yes, that list includes Michael Jordan.
Playing his sixth straight finals, James nearly single-handedly carried the Cavs back into this series and finished with 27 points, 11 assists and 11 rebounds as the Cavs gave their city its first major sports victor since the Browns won the National Football League title in 1964.
He also won the award in 2012 and 2013 while helping Miami Heat to the title.
“I’m just hoping it goes in”, Irving said of just his second 3-pointer in five attempts in the game.
Curry – who said beforehand he needed the best game of his career – scored 17 points on 6-for-19 shooting, while Splash Brother Klay Thompson added 14 points while making 6 of 17 shots. But the one on Iguodala should really count as more than one.
“I tried to reach at the ball, stay in front of him, make it a tough shot”, Curry said. That was the second-most-watched NBA game ever on ABC behind the 28.2 million who tuned in to watch the Lakers take the Celtics 83-79 to snag their 16th and most recent NBA Championship. He flicked his jammed right wrist and made one out of two free throws, giving the Cavs the two-possession lead they wouldn’t relinquish. The self-loathing of each passing sports season is gone. That’s much better than his ranking throughout the regular season, when ROI ranked him as “overpaid” in comparison to other players. After all, he still has a future, and his present is unprecedented.
His place in history can wait.
