After passing math test, Vernon Adams is officially a Duck
Now, they can finally be put to rest.
Andrew Greif of the Oregonian reported in July that Adams’ transfer to Oregon was being held up after he didn’t officially complete his degree at Eastern Washington University.
In fact, coming out of Bishop Alemany High School (Mission Hills, California), Adams was a no-star recruit by Rivals, ESPN and Scout, holding offers from only Portland State and Eastern Washington.
Adams, the runner-up for the Walter Payton Award – the FCS version of the Heisman – the past two seasons, has already missed a few days of Oregon’s preseason practice, which began Monday. But if you fail, you’ll be the nation’s best quarterback without a place to play (and everyone will know you failed that test). He is eligible to join the team upon passing the math class and completing his undergraduate degree requirements, but whether he can get up the speed quickly enough to supplant Jeff Lockie as the Ducks’ starting quarterback is in question.
Despite that, according to the Oregonian, Adams, who hopes to join practice on Friday, has been living in Eugene since June and has had an Oregon playbook to study.
I talked with Bralon Addison today, who has worked out with Vernon in non-official capacities before, and says he thinks he would be a good fit for this offense.
Although Adams needs to make up for lost time in terms of learning the Ducks offense and building a rapport with his new teammates, Oregon doesn’t start the season until September 5, when it coincidentally plays Eastern Washington.
“It was not the first time that’s ever happened on signing day in my career”, former Portland State coach Nigel Burton told PSUVanguard.
Oregon will host Eastern Washington to open the season on September 5.
