After Rubio stumbles, rivals see opening in New Hampshire
Among Republicans, real estate mogul Donald Trump was looking for a first win in New Hampshire after Texas Sen. But Hillary Clinton is in MI.
“I think that the anointment [of Rubio] is now over, so that changes the entire race…” In fact, it’s the nation’s first primary and the next in a series of clues into what Americans want in their next president. “I am ready to roll right into SC”, he later told reporters.
Todd Harris, Mr Rubio’s chief adviser, told The Daily Telegraph he was “not worried” about how rattled his candidate had looked in the debate.
In the process, most of the candidates generally avoided attacks on Trump, who continues to hold big leads in those same New Hampshire polls.
But for other candidates, like Republican Govs. One voter after another invoked his debate takedown of Florida Sen.
Trump has built his campaign in part around his self-declared reputation as a “winner”, and a loss in New Hampshire would intensify doubts that he can translate opinion poll support into votes.
For Democrats, Sanders drew another large crowd Sunday in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, where he reprised his indictment of a “rigged economy” and “corrupt campaign finance system”. “It’s like Candy Land”, he argued at a campaign stop in Hampton, because Kasich gets to work with a GOP-run legislature.
‘BRIDGEGATE’ EMAILS: In an unrelated development, two indicted former New Jersey officials on Friday won a judge’s approval to obtain emails gathered by the law firm Christie hired to investigate the so-called Bridgegate scandal.
Though he was not asked about it on Saturday night, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has previously said he did not consider waterboarding torture and would not rule it out as an interrogation method. “But I’m just better, because I’ve been tested”.
Bush, like Christie, has hammered away at Rubio’s record over the past month. “I think a lot of them made up their minds last night”, Hogan said, lauding Christie’s debate performance.
“Christie had a very good night, but so did John Kasich”, said Spilliotes of the OH governor who had topped Christie in the recent polls. You’re getting pounded for repeating that speech.
During Saturday night’s debate, Christie accused Rubio of recycling a canned speech about President Barack Obama’s preparedness for the job. Christie, if he didn’t outright demolish the freshman senator on national TV, pulled the rug out from under Rubio’s surge. “You just simply haven’t”.
On Sunday, it was back to serious discussion for Sanders.
He said: “Chris Christie wanted to turn this debate into some kind of mud wrestling match between him and any other Republcian he thinks is standing in his way”.
Four of the seven candidates in Saturday’s debate predicted a Carolina victory over the Denver Broncos on Sunday. Trump is polling in the lead in both of those states as well.
“He didn’t answer your question, and that’s what’s going to happen with our enemies and the people we compete against”, Trump said. It seems that Christie is banking on his strong debate performance and continued personal time with possible voters to usurp Rubio’s spot as the establishment favorite.
“We knew somebody was going to come after Rubio”, Spiliotes said.
