After Strasburg leaves no-hit bid, Reds get single in 8th
In a bonus Nationals-themed “Fun With Arbitrary End Points” segment: Washington ranked 1st in runs scored (156), 2nd in SLG (.449), second in OPS (.788), third in home runs (39) second in doubles (57) and second in walks (104) in the NL… since June 1st before today. Stephen Strasburg was removed from a no-hit bid after 6 2/3 innings Sunday by Washington manager Dusty Baker, and Ramon Cabrera singled against Matt Belisle leading off the eighth for Cincinnati’s first hit.
Strasburg started the day (10-0) in 14 starts with a 2.90 ERA, a 2.86 FIP, 24 walks (2.32 BB/9), 118 Ks (11.42 K/9) and a.218/.275/.346 line against in 93 innings.
Washington began the day with a major league-low 27 errors in 81 games. We just grinded through the seventh inning.
The Nationals led 9-0 entering the bottom of the seventh inning thanks to homers by Wilson Ramos, Danny Espinosa and Bryce Harper.
Cozart’s double made it 4-0 in the second. Hamilton later scored on a wild pitch, and Peraza had an RBI single and Bruce a run-scoring groundout.
Yankees 6, Padres 3: Mark Teixeira hit his 400th and 401st home runs, and Chad Green got his first big league victory. Stephen Drew homered in the eighth off Jumbo Diaz to make it 12-1.
Espinosa homered after Lamb walked the bases loaded in the fourth.
Then on Saturday Baker revealed that Strasburg, who hadn’t pitched in a game since June 15, was scheduled to return on Sunday. “That is what you do when you hit well”.
He got a no-decision June 4 in Cincinnati after allowing three runs on four hits in 5 1/3 innings. The Nationals (50-32) have won seven of their last eight games while the Reds (30-53) have lost six of their last seven. Washington had 15 hits while the Reds had just three.
Espinosa now has a team-high 18 homers – one more than Harper.
“It is unreal. It is insane”, Espinosa said. He labored through 5 1/3 innings against the Reds on Saturday allowing a season-high 10 hits and four earned runs with a noticeable drop in velocity. Reds bench coach Jim Riggleman grew up in nearby Rockville, Md., and was the manager of the Nationals from 2009-11….
Reds’ first baseman Joey Votto returned to the lineup this afternoon after missing last night’s game with a sore right shoulder suffered on an awkward slide into second on Friday night.
