After Taiwan elections, China tells to abandon independence “hallucination”
The election came after a historic meeting between President Ma and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Singapore in November for talks that were seen as largely symbolic – the first in more than 60 years. He said. “I congratulate Chairman Tsai Ing-wen of the Democratic Progressive Party on her victory”, he said.
Tsai will have to balance the superpower interests of China, which is also Taiwan’s largest trading partner, and the United States with those of her freewheeling, democratic home.
The DPP has traditionally leaned in favor of independence for the island from mainland China, which could anger Beijing, which views Taiwan as an integral part of its territory that is to be taken by force if necessary.
Instead of being a failure, the mainland’s cross-Strait policies, which encourage peaceful ties across the Strait, have guided Taiwan’s public opinion that people dare not, can not and do not want to seek independence.h Since the majority of the voters in Taiwan chose the DPP, the DPP should take maintaining the status quo of peaceful cross-Strait relations as its top responsibility. “So why should it blow up?”, Shelley Rigger, a professor of East Asian politics at Davidson College in North Carolina, told the NY times, adding that even if Tsai is elected, relations with China would remain stable.
Tsai said she work to recruit talented people to her cabinet, increase the competitiveness of Taiwan’s export-oriented economy and safeguard the food supply following a series of scandals.
Her rival, Eric Chu of the ruling Kuomintang, or Nationalist party, conceded defeat at 7pm, just three hours after polls closed.
“From Beijing’s perspective, elections in Taiwan are domestic or internal affairs of Taiwan, and there is no incentive on the Beijing side to intervene or interfere in that process at all”, said Victor Gao, director of the China National Association of International Studies. Expectations are high that she can help overcome Taiwan’s economic woes.
Tsai is the second DPP presidential candidate to be elected, following former president Chen Shui-bian in 2000 and 2004.
“This particular incident will serve as a constant reminder to me about the importance of our country’s strength and unity to those outside our borders”, she said.
“Only when we grow stronger will we be able to gain respect and protect our people and our democratic way of life”, Tsai said, according to the AP”.
‘We share with the Taiwan people a profound interest in the continuation of cross-Strait peace and stability, ‘ it said.
“What we are concerned about is the relationship between the two sides”, the spokesman, who wasn’t identified, said in a statement.
“There is only one China in the world, the mainland and Taiwan both belong to one China and China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity will not brook being broken up”, the ministry added.
In a blitz of advertisements carried in newspapers on Friday, the final day before polling begins at 8 a.m. (0000 GMT) on Saturday, the Nationalists showed pictures of an anxious looking child clutching a Taiwan flag with the words: “I hope this vote will enable us to no longer feel afraid”.
