Trump had no criticism of Flynn, however, at the Wednesday news conference. But he can use his upcoming meeting with Netanyahu to reassert that America’s bedrock alliance with Israel rests upon shared values and interests, and that this alliance is great again. In fact, if The Donald puts a “veto” on the new legislation, Bibi will only have to wait for the Israeli Supreme Court’s decision, which will probably give a negative opinion on the law after almost twenty Israeli and Palestinian NGOs have filed an appeal stating that the law is not only contrary to global law, but also incompatible with the Israeli legal system.
“As far as settlements, I’d like to see you hold back on settlements for a little bit”, Trump said while turning toward Netanyahu.
Peace Now, a left-leaning group promoting the two-state solution, also criticized passage.
Hours before Netanyahu’s departure for Washington, Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan told Army Radio that “all members of the security cabinet, and foremost the prime minister, oppose a Palestinian state”.
During the news conference, Trump also responded to a question about the sudden departure of former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, who was effectively fired by the president late Monday night.
The White House has indicated that a peace deal between Israel and the Palestinians may not involve a two-state solution.
President Trump said he would be interested in facilitating Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations toward “the ultimate deal” and is prepared to put his most senior aides, including Jared Kushner, on the case.
An agreement on building only inside those blocs would “help the prime minister with the pressure that he is under from Jewish Home and from some of the right-wing ministers in his own party”, Ross says. Suddenly, talk about the great opportunity presented by Trump’s election came to a stop.
“There are two prerequisites for peace”, said the Israeli prime minister.
That letter may figure prominently in this week’s meeting between Trump and Prime Minister Netanyahu.
It was the first time Trump had to intensively deal with the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and his statements revealed a certain degree of ignorance. “The persistent Palestinian refusal to recognize a Jewish state”, Netanyahu said.
Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said Thursday that she would support a one-state solution if it were agreed upon by both the Israelis and the Palestinians, Sky News reported.
Netanyahu warned his colleagues in the cabinet that the one thing Israel can not afford to do is to anger Trump. Rather, Netanyahu insisted that “Palestinian hate” was the central problem.
Israel has good reason to be especially concerned with Russia’s growing military presence in Syria, where Moscow has deployed advanced fighter jets as well as sophisticated surface-to-air missile systems like the S-400 that can track aircraft taking off from any place inside Israel and significantly undermine Israel’s aerial superiority throughout the region.
The challenge for Netanyahu is how to separate the Russians and the Iranians. “The only difference is that someone in the U.S. government is saying it out loud”.
Two last things should be noted. Both have much to gain politically from marking a clean break from the Obama years.
President Trump’s desire to demonstrate he is different from his predecessor on Israel is not unique.
Finally, it’s important to note that the police investigations into Netanyahu remain ongoing.
