Agent shot while serving warrant still in critical condition
Ivey, who described the shooting as an ambush, said the suspect opened fire on deputies as they approached the house.
Ivey said deputies and Titusville police were investigating complaints of prostitution at a home on Covina Street in Port St. John.
A central Florida county sheriff says a deputy who was serving a search warrant as part of a prostitution investigation is in critical condition after a shootout.
Agent Smith was critically wounded and transported to the hospital after the shooting.
Sheriff Wayne Ivey thanked Brevard County Fire Rescue for treating Smith at the scene, and asked members of the public to pray for the injured deputy. Deputies returned fire and wounded the gunman. He was listed in critical condition.
As Smith arrested the woman, her uncle, John Derossett, came out of the house with a firearm and started shooting at Smith, Jacobs said.
Agent Peter Stead has been employed with the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office since October, 2011. Mary Derossett, who was already out on bond for an unrelated charge, remains held at the jail complex without bond, officials report.
Derossett was wounded in the incident and is receiving medical treatment at a local hospital.
The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) will be conducting independent and parallel investigations relating to the use of deadly force.
“The Sheriff’s Office and Casey’s family are very grateful for the incredible support to include the blood donations that are continuing today and over the next several days”, said Cpl.
