Aggressive hammerhead doesn’t back down from kayaker
A California fisherman was forced to fend off an aggressive hammerhead shark that he thinks was after more than his fish.
He used his oar in an attempt to move the shark away from knocking into his kayak.
“He was right behind me and I couldn’t tell if we was biting my kayak or head-butting it or what he was doing exactly, but I didn’t want to find out what he was capable of”, McCracken told FOX 5.
Mark McCracken was fishing for bonito off Gaviota State Beach near Santa Barbara on Saturday when the shark tried to attack his kayak, NBC News reports.
McCracken said he thought something was wrong with the animal by the way it followed him all the way back to shore.
“Pretty weird and insane experience to say the least”, McCracken said.
The encounter lasted about 15 minutes.
He added on Instagram that even after returning to shore, the shark continued to swim “in about 3 feet of water like he was just waiting for me to come back out”.
About a month ago, lifeguards shut down some beaches in La Jolla after a kayaker filmed an 8- to 10-foot hammerhead circling his skinny vessel. But warm weather and currents from the south made southern California waters warmer than usual.
