Ahmed Mohamed family wants $15 million from Irving, Irving ISD
The family of Ahmed Mohamed, the Texan schoolboy who was arrested after taking a homemade clock to school, has demanded $15m in compensation and written apologies from the local mayor and police chief.
The City of Irving and Irving School District received a letter on Monday from the family’s attorneys.
“Ahmed’s reputation in the global community is permanently scarred”, read both letters to Texas officials, which were sent Monday and elaborated on details from the incident.
The letters claimed the teenager’s civil rights were violated and that he and his family suffered physical and mental anguish. In a letter of demand, Mohamed’s lawyer alleges that school officials never really thought that the clock was an explosive device, as the second teacher didn’t initially treat the gadget like she thought it was unsafe.
“If you fail to comply with the above demands within 60 days from the date of this letter, you should expect that we will file a civil action addressing the causes of action and events described in this letter”, one of the letters stated. “The only one who was hurt that day was Ahmed, and the damages he suffered were not because of oversight or incompetence”, said the letter to the city authorities.
City and district officials didn’t have any immediate comment on the letter. He was allegedly targeted by officials,”because of his race, national origin, and religion”. “They just decided not to do it”.
In separate letters to the city of Irving, located west of Dallas, and the Irving Independent School District, lawyers said the ninth grader was wrongfully arrested, illegally detained and questioned without his parents.
Mohamed was suspended three days, and later withdrew from the school. President Barack Obama invited Mohamed to the White House.
Throughout our coverage of this PR disaster (and I do sympathize with the City of Irving-having worked up there, I know that these people don’t deserve even half of the flack they’re fielding over this) we have focused on the tragedy of the staged racial narrative. The Mohameds want $10 million from the city and $5 million from ISD over the September 14 “suitcase clock” incident at MacArthur High School involving their son.
