AI: Russian Airstrikes in Syria Kill at Least 200 Civilians
“Some Russian attacks seem to have been directly targeted towards civilians and civilian objects”.
“It felt very different from other air strikes… the ground shook like an natural disaster… this was the worst destruction I had seen…” Assessments of six Russian assaults showed in that airstrikes broken or destroyed dozens of civilian sites together with a mosque, a market, medical facilities and houses, it stated. He said, however, that Russian Federation was less concerned about collateral damage in Syria.
Smoke rises after what activists said were cluster bombs dropped by the Russian air force in the town of Maaret al-Naaman in Idlib province. More than 40 civilians are thought to have been killed in the attack, which Ghazal said took place in an area where armed groups were not present.
In one of the bloodiest maneuvers documented by the organization, they pointed out three missiles fired at a crowded market in the center of Idleb, which resulted in the death of 49 civilians.
He pointed out that militants used weapons mounted on vehicles and that “each vehicle is considered a tactical unit and represents a legitimate military target”.
There are indeed some “serious defects” in the credibility of Amnesty’s report, security analyst and former counter-terrorism intelligence officer Charles Shoebridge told RT, suggesting that was rather an emotional call to avoid civilian casualties, than an independent and impartial investigation.
As for cluster munitions, “Russia does not use them… we have no such weapons on our base in Syria”. In a few moments, the main street, packed with people buying and selling fruit and vegetables, turned into a scene of carnage with burning cars and the wounded screaming in terror.
Amnesty, however, said it has gathered evidence, including photos and video footage, suggesting the Russians have used unguided bombs, including cluster munitions, in densely populated civilian areas.
Several medical groups have also accused Russian Federation of air strikes that have hit field hospitals in Syria.
Moreover, after a bombing on a mosque in Jisr al Shughur, in Idlib province, on October 1, Moscow responded to the charges by showing satellite images in which the mosque was apparently intact.
The latest bombs come with Vladimir Putin’s campaign in Syria under fire from Amnsesty International, which has claimed Moscow is guilty of violating humanitarian law.
A defiant Russian Defence Ministry says the report, which contains “trite cliches” and “fake information”, ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov told a news briefing.
