Aiken’s Kisner misses out in Greenbrier playoff, Lee wins – WRDW News 12
An act of kindness may have given New Zealand golfer Danny Lee the “good karma” needed to win the Greenbrier Classic in West Virginia.
Danny Lee won the Greenbrier Classic on Sunday for his first PGA Tour victory.
Lee fired a closing round three-under 67 to finish at 13-under 267 and set up a playoff with Hearn (67) and Americans Robert Streb (65) and Kevin Kisner (64) in the $6.7 million event.
“I only wish I had a girlfriend so it wouldn’t be so lonely in the room”, said the Rotorua-educated, South Korea-born star.
“I think Callaway got a bit disappointed, but they found the best driver ever, I just love this new driver”. In addition to full status on the PGA TOUR through 2016-17, he’s now exempt into the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and PGA Championship this summer.
Kisner lost in a playoff for the third time this season.
Official rules precluded Streb from replacing the putter during the course of the round, so he and caddie Steve Catlin opted for a wedge to hit all putts.
Amazingly, he putted superbly with his 56-degree wedge, sinking five birdies, though his luck ran out at the 17th, where he three-putted.
“I was so nervous”, Lee said before the playoff began.
Lee, a ex- USA Amateur champion, made par at the second extra hole to edge out Canadian David Hearn for his breakthrough win. The support of my parents gave me strength to go back out there and try again.
Lee carded a three-under par final round to leave him in a four-way play-off.
Former world No. 1 Woods snapped a string of 55 straight rounds with a bogey or worse – a stretch dating back to his last bogey free round at The Barclays in 2013.
Lee said he would need a bit of time to “digest” what he had achieved. There also were four spots handed out a week ago at the Travelers Championship and one more is available this week at the John Deere Classic.
The victory books Lee a spot at this month’s British Open at St Andrew’s and a place at next year’s Masters.
