Airlines still see mass cancellations in wake of blizzard
The storm, which brought an entire season’s worth of snowfall to the city over two days, prompted cancellation of all flights into and out of Philadelphia on Saturday.
Almost 1,510 flights remain delayed or cancelled in the aftermath of a massive blizzard that slammed into the eastern US, wreaking havoc on travel in the nation’s busiest cities. The airline says it plans to gradually resume operations tomorrow at airports in the Washington area.
American Airlines flights are expected to resume Monday at the three New York-area airports, as well as the three serving Washington, D.C. The airline’s operations in Charlotte, North Carolina, and a limit number of flights in and out of Philadelphia resumed Sunday afternoon. Similar flights were scheduled to depart from the Cincinnati and Columbus airports.
Flight tracking service FlightAware says more than 5,500 flights to, from or within the USA have been cancelled this weekend due to the blizzard hitting the East Coast.
“Snow teams have been working, and will continue to work, around the clock at both airports to remove snow from runways, taxiways, gates and roadways”.
The conditions in the U.S. have meant as many as 45 flights to the United Kingdom have been cancelled.
Several passengers were rerouted on different flights arriving in Manchester. Those cancellationscentre on Philadelphia, Washington and NY, with airlines essentially shutting down all flights into those cities.
Thousands of flights have been canceled across the country.
All major airlines have issued waivers for travel over the weekend, allowing passengers to rebook onto earlier or later flights to avoid the storms. It also lets airlines restart the system quicker because they have planes and crews in place. Numerous rooms are nonrefundable when booked, so lock in only once you are stuck.
