Aksel Lund Svindal wins super-G for Lake Louise sweep
Norway’s Aksel Lund Svindal followed up a downhill triumph with a victory in Sunday’s (Nov 29) Alpine Ski World Cup men’s super-G race at Lake Louise. The Norwegian won the season-opener Saturday in Lake Louise.
The 32-year-old – who missed most of last season due to a torn left Achilles sustained playing soccer – claimed victory in the Downhill on Saturday to show everyone he was still the man to beat. Travis Gangong of the USA finished third. Italy’s Peter Fill of Italy, second in the downhill, was third in 1:29.75.
Fill, 33, took his only World Cup victory in a 2008 Lake Louise downhill. Jansrud swept both races past year. I didn’t think I managed that too well.
His time in training was one minute 48.97 seconds.
Guay, from Mont-Tremblant, was three-quarters of a second behind Jansrud. “It wasn’t a winning run, but I thought it was good enough for a top 10”.
Calgary’s Jan Hudec withdrew from the downhill because of knee pain, but had not ruled out Sunday’s super-G. “I did exactly what I wanted to do and I was accelerating where I wanted to”.
“It just popped me outside the line and I felt I couldn’t make it back on that line and really have a decent time, so I just pulled out”. Late for morning course inspection and rushing to get out of the hotel, Hudec jammed his skis into a door frame and his head collided with the skis.
