Al Golden Hired As Lions Tight Ends Coach
Two former Power Five head coaches have officially joined an National Football League staff.
The former Hurricanes coach, fired in October after Miami’s 4-3 start and a 58-0 loss to Clemson, was hired Monday by the Detroit Lions as the team’s tight ends coach.
Former Miami coach Al Golden.
As an assistant, Golden has been on the other side of the ball, serving a stint as Virginia’s defensive coordinator and leading at Boston College and Penn State as linebackers coach. Prince had coached tight ends for the first season-and-a-half of the Caldwell era in Detroit, but slid to the line after the mid-year firing of OL coach Jeremiah Washburn.
Golden had been the head coach at the University of Miami before getting fired after a 4-3 start to last season. He was the coach there from 2011-15 and at Temple from 2006-10.
Golden, 46, played tight end at Penn State under the late Joe Paterno, but has never served as a tight ends coach in his career.
Golden posted a 32-25 overall record with the Hurricanes, which wasn’t good enough to remain at such a powerhouse program.
Prince remains the offensive line coach heading into the 2016 season, but the team has moved Fitzsimmons back to his special teams role, which provided the opening for Golden to take over the tight ends.
The Lions finished 7-9 this season.
